BIOGRAPHY
Jason Markey has experienced nearly every aspect of the music industry hands-on as his nearly three-decade career has evolved. Currently President Film/TV/Publishing and Soundtracks at the innovative global media conglomerate STXEros Global, Markey got his start in music promoting D.I.Y. concerts – entrepreneurially packing thousands of local teens into the backyard of his family’s San Fernando Valley home to see shows by cutting edge bands like The Adolescents, The Descendants, and others. Since then, Markey has become known for synergizing the skill sets he’s acquired in leadership positions spanning major-label A&R and marketing to publishing and overseeing syncs, soundtracks, and music supervision for major motion-picture and television releases.
Markey is the rare studio executive who actually has experience running a record company. Before segueing into his roles in multi-platform media conglomerates, Markey rose to General Manager at Immortal Records; there, he helped launch the careers of 30 Seconds to Mars and worked with childhood friends, Incubus, as well as creating and marketing a series of innovative genre-focused, hit-driven soundtrack albums for box-office franchises like Spawn and Blade. After an esteemed career serving in A&R departments for major labels such as Arista and American Recordings, Markey came to Immortal. In his A&R roles at those storied imprints, Markey became famed for both his ears and acumen. Working alongside Clive Davis and Rick Rubin’s legendary likes, Markey developed, signed, and implemented marketing campaigns for artists including Velvet Revolver. His entrée into A&R came at MCA Records: there, under veteran mentors Paul Atkinson and Ron Oberman, Markey initiated several high-profile signings.
After a successful experience at Immortal Records developing soundtracks, in 2008, Markey followed Immortal founder Happy Walters to become EVP Film/TV/Publishing and Soundtracks at the newly formed entertainment studio Relativity Media. At Relativity, Markey founded the company’s music and publishing divisions from the ground up, creating impactful syncs and overseeing supervision and soundtrack collections for successful film releases like Dallas Buyers Club, Act of Valor, Bridesmaids, Dear John, and several other Nicholas Sparks films. Markey then went on to build a full-service in-house music division at STXEros Global in 2015. At STX, Markey heads up the music, supervising and overseeing original scores for all film and TV projects, including notable releases Hustlers, the Bad Moms movies, Edge of Seventeen, The Upside, Ugly Dolls – as well as maximizing the studio’s publishing catalog for the age of streaming.
Combined, the soundtracks for which Markey has been involved with – either in A&R, producer, or music supervisory capacity – have gone on to sell tens of millions of copies, earn many millions of streams, and lead to numerous Golden Globe, Academy Awards, and Grammy nominations such as the Diane Warren penned “Grateful,” sung. By Rita Ora, which was nominated for The Academy Award for Best Original Song. Based in Los Angeles, Markey also serves in various capacities for many non-profit charities, foundations, guilds, and art organizations. He maintains advisory roles for The World Soundtrack Awards, Songclip and lends his time to Education Through Music-LA and many other charitable operations both in and out of music.
